“Starting a company is like eating glass and staring into the abyss.”
Here at The Cannon, that Elon Musk quote is one of our favorites. We’re in the business of supporting those brave souls who believe in something so passionately, they’re willing to take that plunge. The blood, sweat, and desktop dinners that come with founding and running a startup cannot be overstated. That’s why we find it so impressive when people start something that gives back to somebody else.
Founding an entirely or partially philanthropic organization combines all the rigors of a startup with the trials of running a non profit. If you’re looking to support startups and give charitably, here are five fantastic groups giving back.
Goodworld #donate. Goodworld made giving charitably through Facebook and Twitter as easy as 1, 2, 3. Just comment #donate on the page of your charity of choice. Goodworld sends a one time sign up confirmation reply. Fill in your information on their secure platform and it’s done.
Hello Fund Hello Fund provides an online and mobile platform for non-profits, working together with their clients to help manifest their philanthropic goals. Not only do they work with individuals and groups to provide fundraising, but they also tailor personalized branding, landing pages, and online marketplaces.
Snack Nation The subscription box model is a proven and popular method of business. Our own founder Lawson Gow worked with GameDay Films CEO Jorge Ortiz to start a philanthropic subscription service, Silly Box. Snack Nation uses the same subscription model to satiate happy offices’ and individual’s midday munchies with a bevy of healthy options. The kicker? For every box of snacks they ship, Snack Nation donates 10 meals to families as a part of the Feeding America program.
Charity Cab Charity Cab is looking to turn the tide on the ride sharing revolution by reverting to the tried and true taxi business with a twist. They offer limited taxi services, and part of the proceeds go to charities such as Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity.
Makers Kit. These guys make DIY project kits along with how-to videos from their founders. They work with PS Arts and Pledge 1% to use their profits to fund public school art programs.
