How The Cannon Community is Giving Back to the Houston Community

The holiday season is all about giving back to the communities that have supported us. Keep reading for more information about how the Cannon Community has given back to our Houston community this year, your options for making an impact this holiday season, and upcoming volunteer opportunities for Cannon Community members.

Chamber Holiday Food Drive

@ Houston LGBTQ Chamber Foundation

The Chamber Holiday Food Drive, organized by the Greater Houston LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce Foundation, benefits LGBTQ+ seniors through the Montrose Center. In 2020, this community event set a record for the largest amount of food and funds received in the Montrose Center’s history, allowing the center to increase the number of Holiday Boxes for LGBTQ+ seniors.

This year, we came together to participate in the Chamber Holiday Food Drive to help support even more LQBTQ+ seniors across the Houston community. Donations the center always needs include:

  • Ready-to-eat microwavable individual mac ’n’ cheese cups (Kraft typically comes in a 12-pack)
  • Peanut butter and crackers
  • Snack-size pretzels, crackers, and Cheez-Its
  • Single-serving pop-top Vienna sausages (4.6 oz cans)
  • Single-serving chunk light tuna in water (5 oz cans)
  • Ready-to-eat individually packaged chunk light tuna in water (pouches)
  • Individual pudding cups (chocolate and vanilla)
  • Individual cups of diced peaches (Del Monte typically comes in a 16-pack)

There is a Virtual Food Drive available for those who were unable to donate items in person.

Houston Fire Department Toy Drive

@ The Cannon Tower

Operation Stocking Stuffer, an annual holiday tradition organized by the Houston Fire Department (HFD), provides toys for more than 20,000 children each year. HFD kicked off the event on Friday, November 5, and the event ran through the holiday season, ending on December 15. The Great Toy Giveaway took place one week before Christmas (Saturday, December 18, 9 AM) at 2400 Reed Rd. Cars lined up for the drive-thru giveaway, and toys were distributed to families until HFD ran out.

The Cannon offered opportunities for individuals to bring new, unwrapped toys and other gifts to The Cannon Tower and drop them off in one of our two boxes, located in the Lobby and in the Management Office (Suite 950). Visit Operation Stocking Stuffer online to learn more about the program, shop their toy list, or find other ways to donate. Operation Stocking Stuffer does not accept clothing donations of any kind.

Houston Food Bank

@ The Houston Food Bank East Branch

Volunteers from The Cannon participated in the Houston Food Bank East Branch’s Scan-a-Can program this month.

In 2020, the Scan-a-Can program rescued nearly 700 tons of non-perishable foods from retail stores. Our team aided in this sustainability effort by sorting through various grocery items donated by Kroger to determine which items will be processed into the Houston Food Bank’s Select Pantry, which should be sent back to the vendor, and which should be thrown away.

Information about participating in this program, and others, can be found on the Houston Food Bank’s website.

2022 Volunteer Opportunities

Brighter Bites Produce Boxing

@ The Houston Food Bank on Portwall all Holiday Season!

The Cannon is planning to participate in the Houston Food Bank’s Brighter Bites program in 2022!

Brighter Bites is a nonprofit organization that works to deliver fresh produce directly to families in need. In addition to providing families with fruits and vegetables, Brighter Bites also helps teach the families how to cook with these ingredients and tracks their data to see the impact their program is making on local communities. So far, Brighter Bites has gotten more than 40 million pounds of fresh produce on the plates of families across the country.

Want to get your team involved in helping provide healthier options to families in our community? Stay tuned for more information about our volunteer opportunities with the Houston Food Bank in 2022, or sign up for a volunteer shift anytime throughout the holiday season at the Houston Food Bank Portwall Warehouse! You and your team will help unload, sort, and re-pack fresh fruits and vegetables into Brighter Bites boxes for families to pick up the same day.

@ The Cannon Galveston @ The MarMo and Galveston Beach

The Cannon team is planning a Galveston Beach cleanup in 2022!

Stay tuned for more information about how we’re planning to give back to our community by keeping the beaches around The Cannon Galveston at The MarMo clean.
